Preface

This book grew from conversations with peers and colleagues. These conversations revealed a distinct set of common issues many of us face when designing introductory design courses, especially in smaller departments or for designers new to teaching and teachers new to design.

First, a frequent theme was the tendency of instructors to cut and paste course materials from a broad range of texts rather than selecting and sticking with a single book. There are plenty of good design textbooks available, but beyond a handful of exercises at the end of chapters, there is little guidance in how to use content as progressive and meaningful hands-on components of an introductory class.
