One of the most difficult and most elusive characteristics of an effective leader is being authentic. In fact, simply being authentic (or as the kids say, “keeping it real”) in your everyday life is extremely challenging. The word comes from the Greek meaning “one who acts on his own authority.”
A part of authenticity comes from within—knowing who you are and being able to communicate that to people on your team. It is saying, “this is who I am, this is what you can expect from me, this is what I know and don’t know, how you can help me be effective, how I can help you and how, together, we can create an effective team.”
