Great leaders stop and take the time to recognize good works by team members and others who support the team. Recognition is after the fact acknowledgment of outstanding performance. As we say, “I caught you doing something right.” It is a way for the leader to say thank you for that special or extra effort.
The purpose of recognition is twofold:
1. Continue the behavior. The goal is to encourage the person to repeat or continue the action.
2. Engage others. It is also hoped that other team members will connect the reward with the behavior and be encouraged to do the same thing in the future.
