WHAT

IS TRUST?

In his important book, Trust in the Balance (1997), Shaw wrote that “trust is the belief that those on whom we depend will meet our expectations of them.” In other words, we trust those who meet our positive expectations.

Confidence in a person or something is based on specific knowledge of the person or the situation. Trust is different in the sense that it is based, in part but not completely, on faith, though not “blind faith.” Trust is susceptible to change when events or facts seem to justify it, whereas blind (absolute) faith is largely immune to change. Trust can be given or taken away as experiences impinge on the person, team or relationship. It is more fragile than faith.
