Objectives of the Chapter

The purpose of the next two chapters is to present techniques of process control when the primary variable to be controlled is not directly measured or if a significant time lag is associated with this measurement that is detrimental to the control system. We will study control using secondary measurements that carry information about disturbances affecting the primary output variable. Such control is referred to as inferential control (IC) since we are inferring something about the unmeasured variable from the secondary measurements. Issues addressed in this chapter include
