Subjective well-being, also often referred to by economists simply as “happiness,” is a multidimensional concept encompassing a number of possible meanings and is much more complex than the old (and today almost abandoned) concept of utility. This chapter focuses on the different meanings and determinants of well-being and on the different theoretical treatments that Behavioral Economics and Happiness Economics have given to the term, with the aim of building the theoretical basis for discussing the impact of Basic Income on individual well-being.
