By now, it is perfectly clear to anyone paying attention in the media industry that digital television is not just about television anymore. With the digitization of content and the advent of nonlinear file-based production, every network and local station has a Web site, frequently more than one. Content is repurposed and distributed to cell phones and handheld devices. And soon mobile television will be available in the United States. Additionally, new outlets such as digital signage in stores, malls, and sports venues—as well as content tailored for elevators, gas stations, and taxis—are increasing the strain on production resources.
