Salvador Isabelino Allende Gossens was born on 26 June 1908 and allegedly committed suicide on 11 September 1973. He was president of Chile from November 1970 until his death during a coup d’état.
Allende was deeply entrenched in Chilean politics for the best part of 40 years. He unsuccessfully ran for the presidency on three occasions, 1952, 1958 and 1964. He was finally elected in 1970.
