Indira Priyadarshini Gandhi was born on 19 November 1917. She was prime minister of the Republic of India for three consecutive terms between 1966 and 1977 and also served a fourth term from 1980 until her assassination on 31 October 1984. She was unrelated to Mahatma Gandhi, but India’s first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, was her father. The Gandhi name she held by marriage.
