Jawaharlal (Pandit) Nehru was born on 14 November 1889 and died on 27 May 1964. He was the first prime minister of independent India. The name Jawaharlal is from the Persian Javâher-e La’al, meaning “Red Jewel”, but Nehru was often referred to as “Pandit” – the Sanskrit word for scholar.
