William Pitt the Elder was born 15 November 1708 and died on 11 May 1778. In 1765, the British Parliament passed the Stamp Act, which placed a tax on printed materials, including legal documents and newspapers, in the American colonies (in part, to raise money to fund Britain’s military presence in America).
