Commitment Aligns Principles and Goals
At a staff meeting the day before Hurricane Katrina hit the U.S. Gulf Coast in summer 2005, Walmart CEO Lee Scott declared, “This company will respond to the level of this disaster. A lot of you are going to have to make decisions above your level. Make the best decision that you can with the information that’s available to you at the time and, above all, do the right thing.”1 This edict was passed down to the store managers with the expectation that this would be how the situation would be handled.
