2.5 Target Behaviors for Students with ADHD

Students with ADHD need positive behavioral supports and visual prompts to cue and remind them of expected behaviors. The following sections describe possible target behaviors or goals teachers and parents may use when tailoring behavior charts, forms, or intervention plans for a child or teen with ADHD. Those for school are appropriate for use with daily report cards and various monitoring forms, such as those in the appendix or described in Lists 1.22 and 2.9. Teachers may select from the variations and optional wording of target behaviors. There are also examples of behaviors parents may want to target for home-based charts. Notice that all target behaviors are stated in positive terms—what you want the student to be doing, instead of what you want the child to stop doing.

Note: In the appendix are some illustrations (icons) that are representative of behavioral expectations. Enlarge or shrink to size and use the illustrations together with the target behaviors. They are appropriate for customizing behavioral charts, monitoring forms, and for use as visual prompts (desk copy or chart size). The appendix material (graphics and charts) are also available online and can be downloaded and printed. See the publisher's link and password on the first page of the appendix to access the online materials.
