An explanation of the relationship between the Lightroom catalog and the way images are stored on the computer
What sets Lightroom apart from other image converters is its ability to manage the descriptive content of the image library. There is much to be said for keeping your images in a well-organized catalog system where they can be retrieved easily at a later date.
The Lightroom catalog (which was referred to as the Lightroom Library in version 1 of the program) plays a central role in everything that you do in Lightroom. As you import your photos into Lightroom, the catalog keeps track of where your photos are kept, as well as what information is associated with or stored in the photos themselves.
