What sets Lightroom apart from other image converters is its ability to manage the descriptive content of the image library. There is much to be said for keeping your images in a well-organized catalog system where they can be retrieved easily at a later date.
The Lightroom catalog (which was referred to as the Lightroom Library in version 1 of the program) plays a central role in everything that you do in Lightroom.
