MANAGING TALENT

Barton had just begun to dig into his workflow backlog when Tyra Gordon knocked gently on the frame of his open door.

“Hi, Tyra,” said Barton.

“Got a minute?” she asked.

“More than that, if you need it. Come in.”

Gordon entered the office and made a point of shutting the door before settling into a chair.

“What’s up?” Barton asked.

“Well . . .” Gordon looked hesitant. “I’d like your advice. I’ve encountered a situation that I’m not sure how to handle. If you tell me to go figure it out, that it’s my job, I’d consider it reasonable. But I’d value hearing your thoughts.”

“I’ll do my best to give them to you straight,” said Barton, becoming more curious by the second.
