The Cylinder

The next fundamental volume you will learn about is the cylinder. A cylinder has a rounded shaft with flat, circular planes at the top and bottom. If we view a cylinder directly from above or below, we only see its circular edge.

When we view a cylinder directly from the side, we do not see the circular planes at the top or bottom. From a side view the cylinder appears to be mostly rectangular. We only see subtle indications of its roundness as the top and bottom bow slightly outward as they round toward us.
