At RISD the range of creative practice, teaching, and learning is vast and complex. Our thanks go to all the contributors in this book who worked to capture what is both definitive and abstract about the process of art and design education, particularly around creative disciplines and modes of learning. Each contributor expressed a reflective understanding fortified with clear expertise. The results will invite a broad group of readers to gain perspective on what happens in our classrooms and studios, and even on how that translates into life after RISD in the professional lives of our alumni as successful practitioners. Thanks to each of the authors for their commitment to this project and to the messages that form a common yet wonderfully textured and varied educational vision.

It would be inconceivable to try to capture fully the breadth and depth of approaches to thinking and making that charge our studios, classrooms, labs, and shops. While some of this variety is reflected in this collection of essays, any anthology is challenged conceptually not just by who is included but also by how many others with valuable voices are not.
