Research and Investigation
All modeling begins with the research and investigation of a particular subject.
Although approaches to investigation may differ, the intended outcome is the
same—the creation of an accurate and useful model. Each subject presents a
unique set of challenges to the investigator. Some topics will require the discov-
ery of previously unknown information, as is the case with virtually all scientific
research. Other topics require the rediscovery of previously known information
that has fallen into disuse or has otherwise been lost, such as archaeological digs
