4 AI FOR EFFICIENCY

In this chapter I discuss uses of AI to boost business efficiency, an objective that leading organisations strive for as part of ambitious continuous improvement programmes that increasingly include automating processes. These in turn are leading to the evolution of organisations into autonomous enterprises where the bulk of high-volume, repetitive and transactional work as well as many customer interactions and decision-making tasks will be done by machines. In turn, humans will only get involved in supervision of the work, guiding the software robots and handling exceptions or in customer interactions where empathy is needed. They will continue to develop, maintain and supervise the automations.
