CHAPTER 4 Life of an Island Caretaker

With 10 days to go until my job was due to start I began to say my farewells to friends, unsure exactly when I'd return. I felt sad to be leaving behind such a close, supportive group of friends who had helped out so much with my preparations and early campaigning. I wanted to share the experience with them. Since it would clearly cost too much to fly them all out to Australia, I decided at the last minute to throw a huge party instead.

My parting speech invited anyone and everyone to come and join me in Australia. All they had to do was pay for the flights — the accommodation was on me! I would sorely miss my wonderful friends.
