Chapter 20. Image Formats

GIMP can manage more than 40 file formats for representing images. It can read 35 input formats and generate 39 output formats. Moreover, it accepts these formats in a compressed form, using either the Gzip or Bzip2 compression techniques.

If we covered all these formats in detail, this chapter would be enormous. Instead, we cover only the formats that are popular with, or at least useful to, many GIMP users. We also discuss the general principles that govern the various image formats.
