Long-range Wi-Fi links are not the only way to connect remote clients to a LAN. Other methods for extending a network are often easier or more reliable.
The main reasons to use Wi-Fi equipment in a point-to-point wireless link are that the equipment is widely available and relatively inexpensive, it doesn't require a special license, and the link can be part of an existing wireless LAN. But it's also possible to use other radios that use different (licensed or unlicensed) radio frequencies or different types of radio signals.
