When I first met Beth, she appeared glum as she said, “I think I’m all used up.” She went on to describe how she had built an identity around being a mother and a social worker. After I got to know her, it became evident that she was not just good but great in both roles. Her two sons had happy families of their own, and they came to visit her often because she was so warm and loving. In her capacity as a social worker she had risen through the ranks to become a director at Child Protective Services.
