Get Real Method 1: Start a Vulnerability Loop
When you take a risk and share something about your own life it can inspire someone else to do the same. This kind of authenticity can start a vulnerability loop, as we describe in the get real chapter. The vulnerability can lead to trust, which can lead to more vulnerability. If you're hoping to build trust with someone, you may want to start with getting vulnerable.
How to start a vulnerability loop:
- Step 1: Reflect on your mistakes, insecurities, failures, or other vulnerabilities—what might you be willing to share with someone else?
- Step 2: Share it. If it feels appropriate, explain why you're sharing (e.g., that you want to create an environment where vulnerability is encouraged or that you want to normalize failure as a necessary part of the path to breakthrough).
- Step 3: If someone else shares a vulnerability in response to your sharing, thank them. If they share first, reciprocate with sharing a vulnerability of your own.
