I hadn’t realised how difficult it was to process a small child for school and take less than an hour over it. Most people’s four-year-olds wake up at six then tear around yelling. Ours seemed to have inherited the sleep gene, so task number one was to wake him up. If done too brutally Gen was too grumpy for breakfast, but if he didn’t eat his breakfast he was too grumpy to go to school.

The teacher told me that one of the central tenets of the school’s ‘Charter for a Bright Young Future’, which I apparently signed last term, was punctuality. I told her I would work on it.
