While I was in Soho Park, a message had been deposited on the answerphone.

Hermann the German would be coming to stay the day after tomorrow, with his new East German fiancée. My troubles had made me forget about those two.

I had only met Hermann once before, and technically speaking he was my errant wife’s friend. He was a nice clean-cut Berliner of about twenty-eight, just finishing his sociology degree.
