At the end of the third week of her flight, Rika finally came home. The threatened move to a flat had proven more difficult to execute than she had imagined.

Back too, came the fax machine, and the full armoury of other office equipment, plus calls in the middle of the night from Tokyo. Term restarted, and I resumed the merry routine of the previous six months, of ferrying Gen, who of course was delighted to see me again, to and from school.

Rika and I circled each other in the house uneasily, not having rows, but not talking either. Gen didn’t seem to notice at all. He was used to us both doing separate things, but however foul we were being to each other, he was never happier than on the occasional meals we all took together. ...
