Chapter 2
A brief history
The ‘business model’ as a management concept is still relatively new. Yet it now dominates numerous management conversations. It has become the primary tool for exploring start-ups, entrepreneurship, innovation and key areas of corporate strategy, such as organisational renewal. In this chapter, we will take a brief walk down memory lane to see how the conversation about business models got started.
‘Before the late 1990s, no one was using the phrase “business model”. Or at least, it hardly appeared in written form. The phrase has since morphed, subtly but quickly, from an abstract theoretical term to one with animate, even living connotations.’
