A. Writing/Writer-Producer Agreements

Because television is a writer-driven medium, the writer-producer agreement is often the most significant deal in the development process. At the development/pilot stage, there is seldom any such thing as a writing deal by itself—nearly every agreement for the writing or acquisition of a pilot script will include negotiated terms for the writer’s ongoing participation in the production of the series as a producer (usually an “Executive Producer,” the highest-level credit in television).1 An experienced creator2 will be expected to serve as the “showrunner” of the series, the lead creative manager of the production process.3 This job requires a complete television production skill set consisting ...
