The Process of Compassionate Listening

Talking Is Sharing but Listening Is Caring

I was invited to a wedding along with my 83-year-old grandmother. It was a two-hour drive that I wasn’t looking forward to. Nonetheless, I decided to make the best of it. I had just learned about brave questions from professor emeritus Dr. Sidney Simon and decided I could at least practice the technique.

As Simon taught me, brave questions are deeper, more personal questions that get away from the superficiality of “How are you?” and “How about that football team?” They take guts to ask and guts to answer. Mixed with the process of compassionate listening, however, they can transform relationships.
