CHAPTER 8Generative tales
In September 2023, Amazon began restricting authors from self‐publishing more than three books per day, after concerns that there was an influx of suspected AI‐generated material.
Amazon also introduced a requirement that authors inform the company when their content is AI‐generated. They now have definitions for when things are AI‐generated or AI‐assisted.
According to Amazon:
- AI‐generated: If you used an AI‐based tool to create the actual content (whether text, images, or translations), it is considered ‘AI‐generated’, even if you applied substantial edits afterwards.
- AI‐assisted: If you created the content yourself, and used AI‐based tools to edit, refine, error‐check, or otherwise improve that content (whether text or images), then it is considered ‘AI‐assisted’ and not ‘AI‐generated’.
It is unclear yet how this will be policed.
Before you go on, go back and read that first paragraph again. THREE BOOKS PER DAY! As an author who has penned 12 books over the past 12 years, I find this gobsmacking.
I know how long it takes to write, edit, typeset and produce a (hopefully) great‐quality book. And people are able to do three per day?! Clearly there's an AI for that.
And there is. ChatGPT (or another generative AI of your choice) can help you with all sorts of creative writing. ...
