6.8. Implementation

Once formally accepted, the process of implementing the application into the live production environment will commence. Implementation should be the result of careful planning and scripting of tasks. This process should be documented and proceduralized to minimize impact and error. Fallback strategies should be available for each high-risk process and resource availability should be adjusted to accommodate potential problems without impacting normal operations. At a point in the implementation or conversion where there will be no turning back, a go-no go decision should be made that distills the risks and prospects for success or failure into a business decision made by the key business stakeholders.

By this point in a development project the testing is complete and the approval to place the application into production has been obtained. Users will have been trained and documentation for operators and users alike will be distributed and generally available. An implementation plan with resource requirements, timelines, and problem scenario solution options will have been documented and reviewed by all who are involved with the process. The business sponsors will have signed off on the project, showing their approval and acceptance to move forward based on a set of documentation that you should be able to review and from which you can draw similar conclusions. Hardware should be installed and configured, sized, and set up for production environment work.
