Rationale of the edited volume

This edited volume compiles a thematic selection of papers dealing with the commons in a global and local context. Most of them were presented in a first version at a conference of the International Association for the Study of the Commons (IASC), held at the University of Bern, Switzerland, in May 2016. However, the concept of the book was reworked independently of the conference. The volume focuses on how, in Europe, the debate on the commons is discussed in regard to their historical and contemporary dimensions, thereby referring to the work of Elinor Ostrom.
