John M. Blain was bom in 1942 in Swindon, Wiltshire in England and emigrated to Canada with his family in 1952. He now lives in Coffs Harbour, New South Wales in Australia.
Drawing and painting were skills John developed from an early age and while attending school on Vancouver Island he became interested in wood sculpture inspired by the work of the indigenous west coast people. Artistic pursuits were curtailed on graduating from high school when he returned to England to undertake a technical engineering apprenticeship.
