Teams do not exist in a vacuum. They are part of an organization with its own mission and goals. The purpose of any team is to help that organization achieve its goals. The team’s goals, therefore, must fit into the overall goals of the organization.
There are situations where a team will work alone—almost as if it was an independent entity—but most of the time the team’s work must be coordinated with the activities of other teams or units.
