In the summer of 1940, to the world’s surprise, Hitler defeated France in less than six weeks, and Vietnam’s sovereignty switched from French colonial protectorate to Japanese-occupied “Co-Prosperity Sphere.” A pro-Japanese, pro-Nazi government run by Frenchmen co-existed beside a Japanese occupation army for the next five years.
