Once upon a time the typical worker in our society sweated a little more, but was anxious a little less. Actual physical work would tax one’s muscles but would not contribute to the mounting form of stress that so easily builds up when handling office work. When you could physically see what you had done—say, moved all the boxes from this side of the room to that side of the room—there was less of a chance of misunderstanding how much you had accomplished.
