12-step program A recovery approach that requires participants to follow specific procedures to remain “clean” from addictive behaviors. The original 12-step program was Alcoholics Anonymous, founded in 1935.
80/20 rule Holds that in general, 80 percent of results come from 20 percent of your effort. The amount of additional effort necessary to achieve 100 percent of results is generally so excessive as to not be worthwhile. The 80/20 rule is also called the Pareto principle, after the Italian economist Vilfredo Pareto (1848-1925) who first made the observation that 80 percent of income in Italy went to 20 percent of the population.
