Questions of Employability

I’ve written enough to have come to a few conclusions about what publishers want and don’t want. Actually, I believe I can express what they want in a single sentence: they want to publish something entirely new that’s worked well before.
Employers are a lot like book publishers. They, too, want “new blood”—fresh ideas, fresh perspectives, fresh ambition—provided the “fresh” candidate can prove that she’s worked well in the past. Employers want some assurance that they are buying a pack of solutions, not a peck of problems. This can lead you into a nasty Catch-22 situation:
1. You are available for hire. (Yippee!)
2. This means you either left or intend to leave your present job. (Uh-oh.)
