Here’s a safe rule of thumb: every time someone does something for you, say “thank you!” That includes someone in your network who answers a question or shares a contact that brings you just a tad closer to getting your next job.
Thanks don’t always have to be formal; they can be quick e-mails that in essence say, “Thank you for whatever. I really appreciate it.” Or they can be more involved, even offering to do something to help the person in exchange for the favor they’ve just done for you.
