Checklist: Getting Your Security Clearance
Be prepared. Begin collecting needed information as soon as possible. The types of information required include:
❑ Past home addresses
❑ Past jobs
❑ Contacts who knew you from all locations (home and work—even school for graduating college students)
❑ All foreign travel dates and foreign contacts
Typically, positions with Top Secret security clearance require information about your background going back 10 years, whereas Secret and Confidential jobs require information going back 7 years. However, some of the questions on the security questionnaire pertain to your whole life. These questions will use the word “ever” (as in “Have you ever …” or “Did you ever …”).
