What’s Your Go vernment GS-Level Equivalent?

One major source of confusion for people transferring from the private sector to the federal government is where they fall on the General Schedule (GS; see Chapter 5). The best way to determine your GS-level equivalent is simply to look at the duties of the job you are considering. If you have completed the outlined duties in the past or are confident that you could do so in the future and can show that you are qualified in your federal resumé, apply for the level stated in the job announcement. If you are unable to perform the duties outlined, consider looking at positions in a lower grade.
