Don’t Buy into These Employee Myths

As I’ve worked with managers over the past 25 years or so, I’ve noticed four common misconceptions regarding employees that many managers consider to be accurate. They accept that these misconceptions—I call them myths—are true and that nothing can be done to change the situation. And then they wonder why their employees’ performance isn’t as high as they’d like it to be. Consider the myths:
• All employees care about is getting a paycheck.
• Most employees don’t care about improving their job performance.
• Employees understand exactly what is expected of them.
• Employees know exactly how well they’re performing.
