Some people like to think of e-mail as a return to the days of belles-lettres and billetsdoux. (These people tend to be a bit pretentious.) Yes, it’s true that e-mail has people writing again, but this isn’t like the letter writing of old. The major difference is that e-mail’s turnaround time is usually much quicker. Instead of waiting weeks or even months to get a return letter, a return e-mail might take as little as a few minutes or a few hours.
