One of the goals of small claims courts is to keep everything as small, informal, and inexpensive as possible while still maintaining the seriousness and respect due to the courts. Many states have decided that allowing attorneys to represent the parties in small claims court adds an unnecessary layer of complexity to what should be a simple process. Other states allow attorneys on the theory that the presence of an attorney simplifies things for people who are in the middle of a conflict. Still other states make it a requirement that corporations and LLCs (limited liability companies) be represented by an attorney, but not ordinary individuals.
