About the Author A section of a book proposal that succinctly introduces the author. It conveys the author’s appropriate credentials, detailing why the author is qualified to write the book; provides previous publishing and/or media history; and supports the author’s platform. See also platform marketing section.
advance The amount of money a publisher pays an author for the right to publish the book. The advance is most often divided and paid in parts with some likely payment thresholds on signing, manuscript delivery and acceptance, and even publication. The advance must be earned out in profits from sales of the book and related book rights before an author will begin receiving royalties. See also royalties.
