Don’t Forget the Guidelines

If an agent asks to see your book proposal as a PDF (short for Portable Document Format), do not send a Word doc. If an editor asks to see your book proposal electronically, do not send it via snail mail. If the guidelines don’t contain this information, you can e-mail the agent or editor and ask. You won’t be a bother. Remember, he or she is interested in your project.
If the agent prefers snail mail, make sure you include a self-addressed stamped envelope (SASE) in your package if you want your materials returned. Otherwise, you run the risk of never getting your material back. An SASE should be the correct size and have the appropriate postage.
