Researching the Competition

A competitive review is not only important for positioning your book, but it’s also a key piece of the actual proposal document. Ask yourself the following questions as you research the competition:
• What are the important books on my topic?
• Which titles are the category leaders and which ones are selling?
• What sets my book apart? Does it fill a need that the other books don’t have?
• Where will my book be shelved in the bookstore? Most stores shelve a book in only one category. For example, will a book titled Raising a Vegan Child be found in the cooking, health, or parenting section?
