11. Feeling down, or depressed?

All of us feel down sometimes. We may occasionally experience low mood, a lack of motivation, reduced physical energy, and perhaps lowered self-esteem; days when we cannot get our act together or pick ourselves up. When these signs persist over a period of time, then we may be suffering from ‘clinical depression’. Depression varies from one person to another in its intensity, persistence and the exact nature of symptoms experienced, but some of the signs are consistent. So if you are consistently experiencing several of the following symptoms then you may be depressed:

  • Feeling sad, blue and tearful (low mood, disrupted affect);
  • Low physical energy, having trouble getting up in the morning (lethargy);
