Let’s not get too hysterical about alcohol. No one’s saying ‘give it up’. But if you’re in less than peak condition it’s one of the obcious culprits.

Apparently there are heart health benefits to wine, due to the antioxidant potential (antioxidants are substances that ‘mop up’ cell-damaging molecules called free-radicals). Probably not quite as many as are claimed. For instance, women can only expect the benefits of alcohol to kick in after the menopause, and even then, more than one or two drinks a day is probably detrimental, rather than beneficial.
